Sweet Dreams Are Made of THIS?!

Friday, June 17, 2011
As an adult you find yourself getting excited about the strangest things and your dreams take on a rather dull, realistic tone. Lately, as I lay my head on the pillow each night, visions of these guys dance through my head.

Yep, happy little heel-clicking washing machines haunt my dreams. (Or they would, if washing machines had heels.)

We bring our laundry into town to wash, usually on a weekly basis. But last week, the stars aligned only for  brief dash through town to grab the gas and groceries we needed to make it through another work week. There was no time to sit around and wait for the laundry to finish a spin cycle. Now as I sort through my work clothes options, things are looking pretty grim. How I wish I could come home from work and pop a load of laundry in my very own machine. Just imagine listening to the washing machine whir quietly in the background while I fix supper and hanging the clothes out on the line to get that wonderful air-dried laundry smell.

But since, given the size of the cabin, I have a choice between a washing machine and a pantry (and I love to eat), maybe something like this is more my speed:

Or how about this guy?

Now if you'll excuse me, I'm off to go put my pants on inside out. Maybe no one will notice. . .

  1. Ada, you make it sound so funny! Yet the situation isnt great at all. Looks like we both face some household shortcomings...and posting about it. Great minds think alike!

  2. I feel you here. I don't have a washer/dryer in my apartment either, and while I don't have to drive into town, I do have to lug them down three flights of stairs and across the apartment complex, to the laundry room, to do the laundry. It is a pain with a capital P. Luckily, I have a ridiculously amazing man who does the task for me while I'm at work 80% of the time. And next month we're moving to a new apartment, where washer and dryer will exist in our living space. Right between the bathroom and the bedroom, to be exact. Thank Goodness!

  3. I dream of a new washer, too-- except my family already has one! The problem is, it's a piece of crap. It's supposedly "state-of-the-art" (whatever that ACTUALLY means) and high occupancy, but it is neither of these things. If the weight of your clothes is distributed unevenly, it stop washing, and you have to adjust it. So, basically, if you don't BABYSIT the washer, your clothes can end up stinky and unclean because they've been sitting in water for an hour.

In short, if you ever do get that fancy, new washer, make sure you do your research. Personally, I wish we had an older model. Those things can last for 15 years and not give you a problem. Now, everything is made to break!

  4. even though my washer is a POC, it is so much better than what i had to do in college: walk a half mile through the streets of boston with my dirty clothes. usually in 2 feet of snow.

  5. I saved for so long to buy a washer and my dad got me the dryer as a birthday gift. I hate the laundromat and my clothes were always getting weird spots on them and being ruined from their washers so I'm very happy to have my own. Maybe you could get used ones from craigslist, have them outside and then build a little porch roof over them, or a little lean to?

  6. Oh sweet, darling woman. I FEEL your longing. The power of the personal washing machine to induce glee should never be underestimated!

  7. Oh my gosh..... Ada, you are a better woman than I. Period. I could not live without a washing machine. I think I would cry. A Lot. That is all.

  8. You crack me up!! I'm living without the use of my oven... it's still dead and still no money for replacements.... but it's okay, because if bake I will eat and if I eat I will bulge. I would LOVE a new washer/dryer-- the stacked kind would work just fine!! but not stacked over the poddy thank you very much! :)

  9. *sigh* I remember the joy of getting my own laundry room. And yet, I'll never forget the days spent at the laundromat. T remember the annoyance and frustration, which makes me appreciate my washing machine now that much more. Here's to a perfectly-sized-for-your-cabin washing machine appearing in your near future!

  10. I spent at least a year hauling laundry either lashed to my kayak or in a sled over to the island and I can relate! I bet that with a nice doily and fake flower arrangement a washing machine could make a very nice (tall) coffee table. For how much GTers talk about septic systems, no one would judge you for putting it front and center, especially if it was energy efficient!

  11. haha- if you bought the washboard you certainly could also cross off a workout for the day! I have to say I totally get the laundry thing- its one chore I love to do. It's clean, warm, soft... and I love the look of clothes on a clothes line too!

  13. We refused to rent an apartment unless it had in-unit washer and dryer. I can imagine living without it, but I'd rather not and I'd rather remain a little spoiled. And yes, I find that my dreams are slightly less unrealistic and I get more and more excited about really weird things, like having my own garden and painting the walls of my future house.
