Christmas is Coming Flash Sale

Friday, December 13, 2013
With any luck now, your Christmas shopping is down to a few last minute stocking stuffers and hostess gifts. Around here, the wrapped presents are slowly accumulating in a corner of the backroom and I'm just waiting for a few more packages to arrive. I'm feeling pretty good about things.

If you're someone who needs a deadline to really get going on any project, be it Christmas shopping or anything else, here's a deadline for you. This Monday marks the last day things can get shipped without worrying about (pricey) expedited shipping, which makes this weekend a perfect time to wrap up holiday shopping.

To inspire you to push through that last slog of shopping and as a thank you for your support and kind words all year 'round, I'm offering a flash sale between now and 11:59 P.M. Sunday, December 15 at my Etsy shop, Yes Sir, Yes Sir! At checkout, enter the coupon code SERENITYNOW to receive 20% off your entire purchase. Coupon code is good for all merchandise and no minimum purchase required.

Happy shopping and thank YOU!

Small Business Saturday and Cyber Monday

Friday, November 29, 2013
At last, we can turn up the holiday tunes, pull out the Christmas ornaments and settle in for a month or so of Yuletide spirit. You know what that means - time to pull out the naughty and nice list and start that holiday shopping. All weekend long, you can enjoy free shipping at my Etsy shop  - where you'll find all sorts of hand knit goodness to stuff into stocking or for a lovely handmade present for some lucky lady in your life.

And check out the supply section of my shop if you're all like, "But Ada, I already know how to knit. Why on God's green earth would I pay you for something I could make myself?" You can snag some pretty good deals on brand spanking new yarn and other supplies at the moment because I got a little crazy with the stash busting this morning.

Happy Holidays! Thank you for considering shopping small and local!

A Stitch in Time

Tuesday, November 26, 2013
Sunday evening came. Sunday evening went, deer season ended and yet, there is no deer hanging in the shed. For the first time in four years, Andy did not get a deer this season. On the bright side (?), barely anyone got a deer this year. The harvest in northeastern Minnesota was down almost 20%, thanks in part to hard winter last year that thinned the herd and some pretty terribly hunting conditions almost every day of the season.

So there's no joy in Mudville. Actually, it's more like Frozenville around here. There's been a serious layer of ice on the bay since Sunday and since it's midday and just about 11 degrees F outside, I'd say that ice isn't going anywhere for the next four - five months. C'est la vie.

It feels strange not having several evenings of sausage making ahead of us and I have to admit a little part of me is dying knowing I can't whip up a batch of venison stew on the first -20 below day in January. But I'm pretty sure we won't starve even if the freezer does look a little skimpy. (At least the freezer still has plenty of garden veggies, eh?) Yesterday I binned up all of Andy's hunting gear and schlepped it and the meat grinder out to the shed. What else can you do?

This morning I wrapped up a project that's basically consumed me for the last week and a half. I finished up the very last mitten is an order of five pairs to be worn by a bride and bridesmaids at a wedding on the first full weekend of December. It was a rush order because the first Etsy seller the bride contacted backed out less than a month before the big day. I have to say, knitting a mitten a day is no way to live your life and I'm really over purple as a wedding color. (Sad, because I used to love it!) But I'm so thrilled to have the project complete and to have added another special element to the wedding day. Fingers crossed that they get a little snow to make the wedding photos even more fun with all of these crazy mittens!

As you probably, I've been struggling with focus and creativity all year. (I know you're sick of hearing about it - please excuse the wallow.) But guess what?!

All of that time spent focusing on mittens seems to have gotten the creative juices flowing because on Sunday morning I sat down and tapped out what I think are the first 500+ words of a children's novel. The story's been drifting through my head since the summer, but I'd been doing my best to ignore it , partly because I didn't have time to write and partly because, a children's novel? Really? Then on Sunday, as I was bringing in firewood, the details of the story became so clear, that I knew I had to at least start it.

I truly have not written a word of fiction since Spring 2011 which, come to think about it, might be the primary culprit in what shall be known as "The Funk of 2013." I'd stopped making room for creative writing, because, well, fiction doesn't generally make you mo' money, mo' money. But it turns out that a steady diet of freelance assignments and commitments is just a recipe for burnout. When I hit save on that little teeny piece of fiction on Sunday morning, my heart felt happier and more free that it has in a very long time.  Sure, I need to get on top of my actual "work work" very soon (November has been an unmitigated disaster, y'all), but somehow I think those 500 words of fiction each morning will actually make it easier to rise up and face the music.

I'm off to town to tomorrow to bake pies and help prep for the annual community Thanksgiving dinner. Is it just me, or has Thanksgiving taken forever to get here this year? (Yes, I know it's late.) I'm ready for some Christmas music! Anyone celebrating Thanksgivikkah?!

The Work From Home Shift

Monday, November 18, 2013
Blogger ate my Monday post. Here it is now.

Alternative post title: If it takes me 6 hours to knit a mitten . . .

I've basically spent my entire adult life believing that I need more hours in the day. I've always overcommitted (I have a problem saying "no") and far too many evenings, I've heaved a great big sigh and thought, "If only I'd managed to get X, Y, and Z done today."

Lately I've been realizing just how much of my life revolves around unrealistic expectations and guilt. It's not a fun way to live, you guys. It really, really needs to stop.

You see, the thing is, that I always think I should be doing more. I should be making more money, writing more, exercising more, cleaning more, being more giving of my time. That's where the magical thinking about, "If only there were more hours in the day" comes in.

Because I work from home and most people do not, I tend to believe that if I am to be accepted by the outside world, I need to work eight hours day at my desk, just like everyone else. Good God, I wouldn't want to look lazy, would I? If I spend an hour out of what is technically my eight hour day starting a batch of bread or cleaning the bathroom, the guilt starts to seep in. "Real people" do not clean their bathroom on workdays, I think to myself.

Happily, I think I might be developing some methods to finally let all that heavy, mucky guilt go.

The first thing that happened was my friend Rose introduced me to Leonie Dawson last week (this post specifically) and I keep going back and reading and re-reading Leonie's 15 hour work week post over. It makes so much sense to me and feels like just the affirmation I needed. When we focus on doing instead of working it's amazing what we can accomplish. Although I'm sure you are an excellent employee, chances are you could accomplish everything you get done in a 40 hour work week in your outside of home job in a  20-25 hour work from home schedule. That's just the way things are.

For example, in my early days of being homeschooled, (gosh, I really should be pretty good at this "work from home" thing by now) we tended to have 3-4 hour school days. That is, we managed to accomplish everything you would have done in a normal 7-8 hour school day before lunch. How? There was no walking down the hall from classroom to classroom. No wasted time when you were done with your work and had to wait 15-30 minutes for all the rest of your classmates to finish up. The same thing goes when you work from home. You can let go of expectations about how long something should take you and focus on the finished result instead. (Also, no meetings!) If you accomplish everything you need to do in a day, who cares if it took you eight hours or not?

The secret to these condensed school and work days is focus and tuning out distractions.

I just love this quote about focus from Leonie's post:

Great,” I hear you saying. “I know, I know, I’m supposed to focus. Seriously, that’s like the most overused productivity word ever.”

To which I say “That’s nice, but are you fucking doing it?”

I'm making "are you fucking doing it?" my mantra for the week and we'll just see what happens to my productivity. (Good things, I hope.)

Stop me if this sounds familiar, but here's what's been happening when I sit down to "work" lately. I get everything cued up to go. And then suddenly I have an urge to open up approximately 6-7 tabs in my internet browser. I check my stats on Etsy. I read a few blog posts. All of these thoughts start rushing through Am I thirsty? Am I hungry? Do I need a cup of tea? Should I go to the bathroom? Maybe I should research a designer for a new blog design. Did I get around to those social media posts I've been meaning to do? Then I go back to my blog post and find a blank screen and a blinking cursor.

When you work with that level of focus, let me tell you, sunset comes around pretty darn fast.

I've been spending all of this time thinking I ought to act like I was working when in fact, I was really just posing as someone working. There's another mantra I like to pull out at times like these when productivity starts to take on sort of mythical elements: "Would you pay yourself for what you're doing right now?"

I got another big nudge towards focus and productivity last week when I committed to knitting five pairs of mittens for bridesmaids at a wedding the second weekend in December. It takes me approximately 6 hours to knit a single mitten, so that's pretty easy math: 10 mittens at 6 hours each = 60 hours of knit time. The mittens need to be shipped by December 1 to give them enough shipping "wiggle room" to arrive on time so that means between Saturday (when the yarn for the mittens arrived) and December 1st, I need to find 60 hours of knit time along with keeping up with all the rest of my work commitments.

At first such a task seemed impossible, ridiculous, "what was I thinking?", etc. etc. And then I realized, if I let go of the social media surfing and the other mindless time wasters, 60 hours in the span of 15 days isn't so bad. That's just 4 hours of knitting a day and I don't ever get any work (other than knitting) done between the hours of 4 - 10 p.m. anyway. If I stay on task, everything will get done just as it should be. In fact, the first pair of mittens are already done.

Focus on the end product. FOCUS. Wring more out of the hours you have and stop wishing you had more of them. Let the guilt go and enjoy what you get done.

10 Degrees and Getting Colder

Friday, November 15, 2013
Can we just take a moment to note what a disaster this week was when it came to getting actual work done. Seriously - so awful. There. I feel better just having said it.

It wouldn't have been so frustrating except last week was the first week in a while where I felt like I gained some traction with work projects and life in general. But no sooner was I all like, "Finally, I've got my groove back" before the groove was gone. Then again, I'm starting to wonder if "my groove" is kind of like my sense of rhythm: nonexistent.

Andy was home a good portion of the week, although the majority of his waking hours were either spent in a deer stand or scouting deer on foot. It's been all for naught so far, which feels a little strange considering how quickly last year's deer season was buttoned up. There's still another week left in the season and plenty of deer in the woods.

It's been a cold, snowy week. Running is officially hit or miss. I'm not sure I like it.

Despite getting next to nothing done this week, my Etsy shop took off like a rocket this past week. Sales galore, custom orders, oh my.  I thought I was ready for the holiday rush, but apparently not, especially since I was somehow sweet-talked into knitting five pairs of birdesmaid mittens for a wedding the second weekend of December. If you need me between now and the end of the month, I hope you don't mind my knitting needles tagging alone. Cripes.

Despite a little Etsy holiday stress, I'm feeling rather festive, which probably has to do with the fact that I spent yesterday afternoon perusing the local shops for gift ideas for the annual gift guide I compile. I have so many gift ideas swirling through my head at the moment and am inspired to do the vast majority of my holiday shopping locally this year. (Says the girl who says that every year and then ends up buying the majority of her presents from Amazon.)

I'm also thinking about doing all of my Christmas shopping with cash, to give local merchants a break on credit card fees and keep the pesky holiday credit card bill at bay. In other news, I'm completely debt-free at the moment. I finished off my student loans last week and vanquished my credit card bill this morning. Although I've never carried a balance on my credit card, it's rather exciting to have the total amount I owe anyone at the moment be $0.00.

I spent yesterday morning volunteering at our community Empty Bowls event, which raises funds for the local food shelf. (That's the bowl I took home, up above. If I'd photographed it in better light, you'd see what a beautiful sapphire blue it is.)  My summer schedule prevents me from getting involved with pretty much anything in the greater community, so it felt so nice to be able to give some time to a good cause, meet some new people, and reconnect with a lot of familiar faces. I contributed some treats to the bake sale component of the event and as I was cutting up my batch of Scotcharoos, it struck me that I may hem and haw about not getting any "work" done, but that those bars will probably do more good in the community than anything I would have produced at my computer. Consequently, I'm coming to believe that you can learn everything you need to know to get through life in a church basement (I'm not even talking about Sunday School here), but that's another post for another day.

Today is Andy's birthday and I am not baking him a cake. After five years of trying to foist my family's tradition of birthday sweets on the poor man, I'm starting to realize he doesn't really give a fig if he gets a birthday cake, or pie. Perhaps a pan of cinnamon rolls are in the works, but we'll just see how this day goes, shall we.

Composting and Looking Ahead

Monday, October 14, 2013
This summer, I spent a lot of time existing and not much living. If you've been around these parts for a while, you've probably guessed from my (few and far between) posts this summer that I've been in a bit of a slump. I can think of more things that I didn't do this summer, than things I did and when people ask how my summer was, I'm not sure how to respond. It came, it went and here it is, mid-October, my season full time employment wraps up this coming Sunday, and the long winter is staring us straight in the eyes.

I spent a lot of this summer in a state of melancholy. I've always been prone to glumness, but usually I buck up and shoulder on. This time however, I went for the full wallow. My creative well felt all dried up. It was all I could manage to work full time, fix dinner, tend and harvest the gardens, clean the house, run, and keep up with Etsy.(Okay, maybe I wasn't melancholy, maybe I was just tired.)

But last week I woke up on Monday morning and felt, like myself. I was awake. I was ready. I was tired of wallowing (or whatever the last few months have been about) and ready to get down to business. I'm calling this summer my "composting" summer; a fallow time necessary to grow great things in the days to come.

So here we are, a week later and I'm declaring it business as usual again here at Of Woods and Words. I'm committing to much more regular postings (I have so many post ideas floating around) and since this winter is appearing to be a little less project-heavy than last year, there may even be a blog redesign in the works before year's end. (Sorry layout, you're soooo March 2011.)I'm thrilled to be a mere week away from working from home and today has been a delicious little teaser, as I've been working from home (with the exception of a late morning board meeting) and actually working on my first freelance article in a couple months.

While it may feel (to me at least) that not much happened this summer, here's some of what's been going on during my absence:

We had our best garden year to date, despite a pretty cool summer. Last night was the first night we had a killing frost, which actually feels like a major blessing after harvesting gluts of green beans, kohlrabi, kale, potatoes, tomatoes, and so much more. Our freezers are filled to the gills and an empty mason jar is rare find in the cabin these days.

I've continued with my running and have 8 miles on the schedule for Friday's run. Whew! Running hasn't gotten easier per se, but it definitely has become a habit and I look forward to my runs, even though the decreasing amount of daylight has made it trickier to get my runs in before work. I got really into the Chicago Marathon yesterday and was so excited to think that in two years' time, I'll be one of those runners. Running = the bomb-diggity.

Over the last couple months, I got the lovelies above ready for a consignment order from Doodle Bird Design and Gifts in Minneapolis. I'm excited to have my knitting in an actual brick and mortar shop. If you happen to be a Twin Cities dweller, Kristin stocks a fantastic selection of handcrafted items from Minnesota artists and the shop is well worth a visit. Plus, you can buy a pair of my mittens, if you're not the sort of person to like waiting for Etsy orders to arrive. ;)

It's been a while, I know. What's new with all of you?!

Etsy Flash Sale - Because I Said So!

Monday, April 15, 2013
YesSirYesSir!

If you didn't already know that T.S. Eliot was from the Midwest, this quote surely gives him away, "April is the cruelest month, breeding lilacs out of the dead land, mixing memory and desire, stirring dull roots with spring rain."

I've never cared for April much. In northern MN, April's nothing but a cruel tease, where spring hopes are dashed with dull, frozen reality. And this April has been hard. Governor Dayton just declared this week "Severe Weather Awareness Week" because our April blizzards aren't slated to stop until sometime next week. (Here that clanking sound? That's every Minnesotan throwing down their snow shovels in disgust.)

So I'm throwing a sale over at Yes Sir, Yes Sir! Why? Because I said so!

I think we all need to shake these April blahs, so take part in some retail therapy and stock up on owl cozies (now available in orange!) and more. From now until 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, April 21, save 25% on your entire order when you apply the coupon code "APRILSNOW" at check out. What a great way to spend part of your tax refund. (I'm so thoughtful like that. ;P)

There are several new items in shop, including a selection of owl tea wallets. If you're an avid tea drinker, you know there's nothing more frustrating than throwing a tea bag in your purse to use at the office, only to find it in disgusting shape when you pulled it out for your morning or afternoon tea break. These little knit pouches protect your tea until you're ready to use it and also work wonderfully for organizing jewelry in your travel bags or keeping little items in your purse safe from harm. Comes in a small size (which fits narrow tea bags like Lipton's and are pictured below) or large (which fits Twinnings, Tazo, and Celestial Seasonings.)
Gold Owl Tea Wallet - $5.95
I also now have a selection of simple gift card sleeves available. Personally, I love receiving gift cards, but they're not exactly the most exciting present to opem. You can add some personality to your gift card by using one of these gift "card-igans." The small knit sleeves also work as small wallets to hold only your most essential items (credit/debit card, driver's license, and some cash.)

Purple and Pink Gift Card Sleeve - $5.95

Blue Shades Gift Card Sleeve - $5.95
I only do a couple sales a year, so be sure to head over to the shop and take advantage of coupon code: APRILSNOW

Etsy Shop Update: The Wearing of the Green

Monday, February 18, 2013
YesSirYesSir!
Happy President's Day! I hope some of you are enjoying a fabulous long weekend. For the rest of us schmucks, it's just another day without mail delivery. C'est le vie.

Truth be told, I'm already looking forward to next month's big holiday: St. Patrick's Day! As must of you know, I have a major soft spot when it comes to shamrocks, cables, green, and anything else Irish. My Etsy shop logo is from a picture I snapped of sheep in the field on one of my many rambling walks through the Irish countryside while I studied abroad in rural Co. Mayo, Ireland in spring 2005. Although I won't be heading across the pond for a visit to Ireland this spring as I'd hoped (when Subarus get sick, they get sick big time. *sigh*), at least my heart traveled to Ireland while I crafted these Irish inspired designs for Yes Sir, Yes Sir!

Irish Flag Coffee Cup Cozy - $7.95

Shamrock Applique Coffee Cup Cozy - $7.95

Green Heather Irish Knot Fingerless Gloves - $29.95
Green Heather Irish Knot Fingerless Gloves - $29.95
I'm thisclose to making my 50th sale in the shop and as a thank you to whoever helps me reach that milestone, I'll throw in a free owl cozy (your choice of color) with that 50th sale. No need for a promo code, just need to be the lucky 50th customer to scoop up this sweet deal.

A Sweet (Heart) Shop Update

Monday, January 21, 2013
YesSirYesSir!

While Christmas is all well and good, I've always found the less-hyped holidays more my speed. Since I was a little girl, I've found great pleasure in celebrating the holidays that could so easily be dismissed as "just another day."  With the tiniest bit of thought and care - a batch of latkes for Hanukkah, a King's Cake for Mardi Gras or little knit shamrocks hanging in the window for St Patrick's Day - the most ordinary of days becomes special.

I knew when I launched Yes Sir, Yes Sir last year that I wanted the shop to reflect my love of the holidays and changing seasons. So I'm excited to unveil a couple new items I've designed with the upcoming Valentine's Day in mind.

In the Yes Sir, Yes Sir selection of coffee cup cozies you'll find a heart cozies. The heart design is mine, using a combination of cabling and seed stitch.

Even if the design is Valentine's Day inspired, you can totally use these cozies year-round. I mean, who doesn't *heart* their warm beverages, right? ;) If you'd prefer less "traditional" Valentine's Day colors for your heart cozy, let me know. I'll happily knit one up just for you in the color of your choice.
Heart Coffee Cup Cozy: $7.95
Need more than just your love to keep you warm? Check out these sweet, ruby red and natural white, double knit mittens with a wrap around heart design. I hate to play favorites within my own shop, but seriously, these may be the favorite item I've designed so far. The deep red yarn keeps the design from being too saccharine and because the mittens are double knit, they have amazing wind-blocking qualities and will keep your fingers toasty warm even on the coldest winter day.
Wool Heart Mittens - $34.95

If you're still feeling worn out from the Christmas holiday season, don't worry, Valentine's Day's still a good three weeks off. That said, a fuzzy, woolen gift from Yes Sir, Yes Sir! is a great way to keep your Valentine warm this year.

Do You Want Cheese with That Wine? Shop Update

Tuesday, December 11, 2012
YesSirYesSir!

I'd hoped to get a few more wine cozies designed and knit up before I wrote this post, but with the holidays just around the corner (actually, Happy Hanukkah!), a big batch of deadline knitting in my lap (not Christmas present related, thankfully, but courtesy of this blasted truly lovely afghan), actually get any more holiday-themed wine cozies knit between now and December 23 started to seem like a laugh. I have big hopes for a line of Valentine's Day wine cozies though. ;)

With my annual holiday whine and cheese gathering with college friends scheduled for this weekend, it seemed as good a time as any to debut the two wine cozies I did manage to create for Holiday Season 2013 in my Etsy shop - Yes Sir, Yes Sir!

Christmas Gold with Holly Decoration Wine Cozy
Scandinavian Snowflake Wine Cozy
Cozies are designed to fit a standard 750 mL wine bottle. Pull a wine cozy over your favorite bottle of wine and not only do you have gift wrap taken care of, you also have a lovely hostess gift that will decorate your host's mantle for many holiday seasons to come.

As we move into the "holiday crunch", it's time to get serious about those stranglers on the bottom of your shopping list. Consider any owl cozy for co-workers or your Secret Santa. Knit headbands make great stocking stuffers.

I do my best to ship your order out as quickly as possible. Domestic shipping within the contiguous United States usually takes 3 business days, but please place your holiday orders very soon to allow for any USPS delays during this busy shipping season. Use coupon code: SNOWFLAKE to receive 10% off your entire order.

Back to Work and Cyber Monday

Monday, November 26, 2012
"I don't want to go back to work today," Andy said when he came into the bedroom yesterday morning to say goodbye before he headed off to work and I headed off to sleep for another hour.

Oh, did I hear him. Last week was a "light" work week, to say the least. It was a week where one of my chief objectives on my to-do list was "bake two pies." (I did: a cherry cranberry and a blueberry.) By about 11:30 a.m. last Tuesday, I tossed in the towel on the idea of having a productive week and headed off to a journal making workshop. *cough* crafting afternoon *cough*

Not that productivity is the only measure we should use to judge our lives by. It was a week filled with family, friends . . . dare I say, "community" and it was a very nice week indeed. I hope you all had a very nice holiday too.

But goodness, it's hard to get real excited about "getting work done" after a string of days in which the biggest decision that was asked of you was whether you wanted ice cream or whipped cream with your chocolate pecan pie. (Answer: both.)

So here's a little Cyber Monday sale to ease you back into the harsh, demanding work world. Use the coupon code "CYBERMONDAY" when you check out from my Etsy shop to receive 20% on your entire order. As an added bonus, I'll throw in a handcrafted, felt mitten ornament with any ornament over $25.00. This sale is only on through midnight tonight, so do yourself a favor and get some of your Christmas shopping out of the way.

Please note, I'm having a hard time keeping my owl cozies in stock. If you were thinking of order some for stocking stuffers (or for yourself - I won't tell), drop me a line so I can give your owl cozies first priority.

Happy Cyber Monday! I wish you all a gentle, peaceful return to work.
