This Is The Sun's Birthday

"i thank you God for most this amazing day:
for the leaping greenly spirit of trees
and a blue true dream of sky;
and for everything which is natural
which is infinite
which is yes
"(i who have died am alive again today,
and this is the sun's birthday; this is the birth
day of life and of love and wings: and of the gay
great happening illimitably earth)
"how should tasting touching hearing seeing
breathing any - lifted from the no
of all nothing - human merely being
doubt unimaginable You?
"(now the ears of my ears awake and
now the eyes of my eyes are opened)"
- e.e. cummings

I woke up this morning and twenty minutes later, running shoes all laced up, I was out the door and on my first run in four almost five years. Ice still rimmed the road's puddles as I chugged along in 34 degree temps, the morning sunshine laying a golden glow on soft grey pussywillows and burbling creeks, as birds chirped away in the pines. It was so much lovelier than I expected, even the running part. I was prepared for  it to feel as though the Grim Reaper was jumping up and down on my lungs, but while the running wasn't easy, it wasn't so bad either.

The beauty of this morning has only magnified as the day's wore on (What a difference 10 days makes, eh?) and I've found myself in an exceedingly good mood, especially for a Monday after a somewhat emotionally exhausting weekend. The big melt of 2013 is (finally) officially upon us and it's hard not to feel a little exceedingly giddy about watching snowbanks disappear to nothing and the lake ice start to pull away from the shore.

Hey look, a garden!

This afternoon I found the first teeny tiny nubbins of rhubarb poking through the ground. Time to give them a dose of compost and hope this is the year they'll actually give us a harvestable crop. I'm anxious to try out an Earl Grey vanilla rhubarb jam recipe.

I feel the need to give the amaryllis above a shout out. Thank you for providing us with beautiful blooms through a very dark April and keeping the hope of spring alive in our hearts. As a wise man (Dumbledore) once said, "Happiness can be found in the darkest of times if one can only remember to turn on the light."

Yesterday was transplant day for half of the seedlings, which means our dining table is history for the next month. I think the tomatoes are officially at the stage where they double in size each week.

Be sure to enjoy some sunshine today. It's the sun's birthday after all - today and every day.

Glad you made it out for your first run! I went running today as well. I wait for the days my husband is off so that I can go and enjoy the gym....
