The Best Laid Plans - Obligatory New Year Post

Tuesday, January 7, 2014
Despite my best laid plans, I did not spend this past weekend at crafting weekend. I'm not sure if you've heard anything about this, but we've been having some crazy nasty weather as of late and between the -35 temps and blowing snow/terrible visibility, in the end, I opted to spend the week at home with my new kitchen gadgets. So apologies for lack of baby photos or harrowing crafting tales that follow. However, a makeup crafting weekend has been scheduled for May, so all is right with the world.

As sad as it was to miss out on crafting weekend, I was happy to spend a quiet weekend puttering about the house. Truth be told, I was suffering from holiday sensory overload - too many new shiny things all vying for my immediate attention! It felt right to whir up a batch of chocolate chip cookies with the new stand mixer in record time (that beast be powerful), test out the  yogurt maker, take down the Christmas decorations, and yes, even to clean the bathroom. It was a lovely, peaceful way to herald in the new year.

Speaking of which, hello there 2014, you beautiful thing. Are we all ready to make 2014 the best year ever? If there's one word I want 2014 to embody, it's "forward." It's time to put the wheels of change in motion and start going confidently in the direction of my dreams. No more mampy, pampy stuff. As Maggie says over at Gussy Sews, let's have 2014 be the year we stop watching and wishing and the year we start acting and accomplishing.

I've known for a while that I'm ready for change, but I've been unsure of just how to create it in my life. To help me craft a successful, exciting, and rejuvenating 2014, I spent a portion of the last two weeks of 2013 (and a couple days in 2014 too), filling out Leonie Dawson's 2014 Create Your Amazing Year workbook. The workbook helps you break down your goals, wants, habits and so much more to get a clear vision of just how you want to shape the year ahead. While I know you could do the same exact thing with a pen and paper on your own, to me it felt right (and more inspiring) to have a "special" colorful workbook to work with.

Since Leonie's really into breakdown your goals into bite-sized chunks, the workbook felt much more helpful to me than just scribbling out a bunch of new year resolutions. As a result, I've set a pretty ambitious income goal for 2014 - one that should lead to wonderful things in 2015, like a trip to Ireland and perhaps some changes professionally - along with a bunch of other totally do-able personal goals.

One of my favorite exercises was making a list of 100 things to do in 2014. 100's a lot of things and my list is only in the 50s at the moment, but I've actually already completed two of those things: making a batch of firestarters (holy cats, those things really work!) and finally dealing with a Christmas sock project (don't even ask) that's been hiding in the Christmas decoration bin for the last five years. A smattering of the other things to accomplish in 2014: take a nap, pick berries, fix my hockey skates, sew something, finish the current writing project, etc. etc.

Over the last couple months, I've already been working to change up the status quo around here. I went on a major purge this autumn, donating clothes that were never worn, getting rid of or fixing stuff that wasn't work, donating and selling stuff that no longer meets a need. While this might seem a little "woo-woo," I do think the cabin feels more peaceful now and it's nice to know that if you pick up a flashlight, it'll actually work. I also started investing more time in creative writing and as a result, I'm over halfway done with a draft of my current story. It feels like I'm starting 2014 ahead of the game and it makes me excited for what the rest of the year will bring. I hope you feel the same.

Whatever your dreams for 2014, I hope they all come true.

Bonne Nuit 2013

Tuesday, December 31, 2013
Well 2013, it's come to this. Just a few hours left until the clock hits midnight and you'll be nothing but a distant memory. To be honest, I'm kind of relieved to see you go. I'm ready for a fresh start, even if the new year is just an arbitrary date on a calendar.

You know how every few years, a year comes down the pike that just feels incongruous? Where you meet with "square peg, round hole" issues at seemingly every turn? Where the harder you push, the more you feel like you're spinning your wheels? Yeah, 2013 just never really happened for me. I have vague memories of 2006 kind of being like this too and I suppose, every seven years or so you're due for a year that's not really bad, but certainly not great either.

Aren't you happy you swung by to spend some time with Debbie Downer this New Year's Eve? ;)

But while I might not have been thrilled with 2013 on a whole, that only motivates me to make 2014 a really super year. And there were moments of 2013 that really sparkled and sang. I mean, how could a year that started off like this be all bad?

NYE 2012
Without further ado, some favorite memories of 2013:

Season tickets for Broadway Across America at the Orpheum in Minneapolis with Sarah.

The advent of homemade bagels. The advent of a Ankarsrum mixer for Christmas so I don't have to incorporate all of that blankity blank flour into the stiff dough by hand has been much celebrated.

A trip to the lower peninsula of Michigan with Mom to visit brother and girlfriend.

This is kind of a lowlight really, but let's not forget this cheery little picture from, oh, April 19th. I was talking to my dad today about hoping that 2014 would be a better weather year. "Yeah, but that's kind of a low hanging fruit," he said. I mean, how could 2014 not be better. Honestly, it's been so blasted cold for so blasted long now that I catch myself thinking that's the end of January. Today, we're a destined for a high of about -12. You guys, I'm not sure how much more of this I can take.

I probably spent more time in running shoes in 2013 then I had for the entire rest of my life. Watch out world, because Santa brought me some high tech running tights and a Garmin Forerunner, so I can really nerd out with split times and all sorts of other details you never wanted to know about my runs. Happily, my test of Garmin proved that I'd been pretty accurately calculating my distance, which is a relief because I'd hate to find out what I thought was a mile was actually 6/10s of a mile or something and also because on Sunday I signed up for my first half marathon. Gettin' crazy.

Whenever I have a not so good day, I just have to think back to the Baby Crafting Weekend Shower back at the end of June to reaffirm that all is right with the world. Did I mention that this very weekend is New Year's Crafting Weekend?! And that I get to meet the crafting babies, Princess Grace and C. Liam Neeson, in just a few short days?!? (Spoiler alert: not the babies' real names.)

2013 was also the year of the mitten. Every time I turned around, I was knitting more mittens. Every time I finished a pair, I vowed I would never knit a mitten again. Surprise, surprise, I just cast on another pair of mittens last night.

It was the year of the snowmobile too. At long last, Andy purchased his dream machine. Who knows what adventures await in 2014?

What were your favorite moments of 2013?

Happy New Year - Alternative Title: Friends Laughing Together

Thursday, January 3, 2013
Happy New Year everyone!

Here we are, three days into the new year already and I've yet to even wish you all well for this new exciting year we're just embarking on. Like so many bloggers, I have a tendency to fall off the face of the earth during the holiday season. Amazingly (shockingly?) enough, the holidays are rapidly coming to a close (to me, it all ends on January 6 - Epiphany, which is my traditional "take down all Christmas decorations day") and today is my first attempt to return to a normal work schedule. Considering that I oversleep (fail), I have a feeling that today will be all about little successes and getting my head back into the work game, while tomorrow will be the first day I actually have billable hours again. Speaking of billable hours, I should really send out some invoices today. (Oh hey there Christmas credit card bill.)

There have been plenty of little, not really work related, but definitely "real" life things waiting for my attention. QuickBooks is updated, I've gotten the car in for a long overdue oil change and my annual physical appointment is scheduled. Yesterday, Andy and I did laundry for the first time in earnest since the first week in December and I'm over the moon about the prospect of clean underwear, clean socks, and clean pants!

I hope that Christmas (if that's the holiday you celebrate) was a very happy day for you and that you're looking forward to 2013 as much as I am. I really have no idea what 2013 will bring -probably just more of the same - but since 2012 was a very happy year around these parts, I say, "Bring it, 2013."
Essential items for New Year celebrating: poppers, hat, and a crazy straw for your champagne

I was lucky enough to celebrate New Year's with my crafting/Ireland/college buddies this year. We officially have way too much fun together. This year's "New Year's Crafting Weekend" spanned three nights and brought us all to the Minnesota prairie in Willmar - or as I and my fellow northern MN crafters referred to it: "Garrison's Minnesota". Willmar's a fair poke from my neck of the woods (hooray for carpooling!), but the time spent together was worth every minute in the car(s). We realized that this is the 6th crafting get-together - to date we've had three summer crafting "weekends" and three New Year celebrations.

One of our fellow crafters had gotten married this past fall and because our lives are typically not nearly as awesome as they appear during crafting weekends, most of us missed the wedding. To make up for this, we decided to throw a surprise second wedding reception.
Interestingly enough, this is the second event of this holiday season for me missing a key player of the event. There was no baby mama at the surprise baby shower last month and the groom was conspicuously absent during this "second" wedding reception.
"Wedding" cake
A major reason why we hosted a second reception was to present the bride with her wedding present - the handknit afghan that we hadn't been able to finish in time for the actual wedding.
Who am I kidding, we barely finished the afghan in time for the second wedding reception. I spent Friday evening sitting on the floor in the basement of some friends' mother's home, sewing on border. Despite my earlier moaning and groaning, the afghan turned out beautifully and I'm really happy we were able to make it happen.
Family photo of everyone in their "wedding" clothes
You may be noticing that there aren't too many pictures of actual crafting. That's because we were usually too busy doing this to get much crafting done:

There was some crafting accomplished though. A Civil War era ball gown skirt was worked on and there was much knitting, including my knitting 8 gazillion (okay, 12) owl cozies for the Etsy shop. Check out the new colors: tutu pink, a mustard yellow/gold, and a dark blue heather.

Braving 0 degree weather to trace a sewing pattern
It's always hard to come back to "real" life after the holiday season, but it just can't be party, party, party all day, every day, I suppose. *sigh*

So far, I'm not resolving to do anything this year other than take care of myself and live life happily and fully. Whatever your New Year resolutions, I wish you the best of luck with them and I hope 2013 goes down as one of our best to date.

2011- in review

Wednesday, December 28, 2011
Ah, 2011. A year that was good to me, that kicked me around, that in the end felt just a bit static. Onward to 2012 and all it may hold, I say. But for now, here's a look back at all that was 2011.

January: I shared beauty tips and explain how to get the perfect blowout.

February: We all know there are lions and tigers and bears out in the woods. (Okay, maybe just bears.) But back in February, I could have sworn things of more magical nature were lurking out there too.

March: Birthday month. Which always seems to evoke worry. And where there's worry, there's plenty of cathartic knitting.

Winter 2011 knitting project

April: The garden began. I got some nice recognition for my writing. (Hooray!)

May: I managed a quick getaway to Chicago with my friend Sarah before heading back to full time work at the museum.
At a White Sox/Twins game

June: Juggled the "back to work" balancing act.

July:

I caught a fish!
Crafting weekend came north!

August: I decided to put everything I saw into jars.  I mean, everything.

September: While the garden grew and grew, the forest decided to catch on fire.

Wedding apparel!
October: I found writing encouragement in an unexpected place and explained the cyclical nature of seasonal employment.
Smokey Bear Jack-O-Lantern happened

November: A month filled with bounty of venison.

December: There was a murder, ice, and a bit of Christmas cheer.
The murder scene

Note: I'm still caught up in holiday hoopla. I'll be back in earnest come January 2nd. Until, then, a happiest new year to all of you! Cheers to 2012!

Blank Slate (Tabula Rasa)

Monday, January 3, 2011
I've been out of town the last few days, catching up with some college friends. Most of us studied in Ireland in spring 2005 (which, come February 2, will have been 6(!) years ago) and all of us knit or are otherwise crafty. The weekend was spent looking at Ireland pictures, knitting, conversing, and watching Jane Austen film adaptions.

If your holiday season has been anything like mine, it's been a busy balance of work and socializing that's been heavy on the socializing. It's been one big happy jumble around here and in the past two weeks, I feel like I've seen more friends and family members than I've seen in the last six months. It's been a lot of happy fun.

Now it's time to be still for a while. No more pounding down Hwy 61 or I-35 for a little while. Time to hole up in the cabin and get some work done, to water the plants, refill the bird feeders, and bring in some firewood. Time to go back to the comforting same ol', same ol'.

While I was gone, it snowed eight inches.  When I (finally) woke up this morning I found this scene:

A blank slate of snow, waiting to be tromped across. It was -16F outside, the fire in the wood stove was quietly smoldering while the lake ice boomed and twanged, and the pine marten was making his rounds by the bird feeders.

2011 comes with no specific plans or expectations. Employment is pretty well squared away. No travel plans have been made. Things seem destined to chug along as they have been. Still, I'm aware that 2011 at this point is 363 brand new days. A fresh layer of snow, if you will, waiting to be tromped across.

I don't really believe in New Year's resolutions. To my way of thinking, if you recognize something in your life worth changing, you might as well go about changing it at the very moment you recognize the problem. Why wait around for the new year?

Still here are some hopes I hold for 2011:
  • Getting my freelance writing to the next level
  • Doing something with the novel and starting work on the next major writing project
  • Determining what the next major writing project is
  • A bigger, more productive garden
  • More mindful eating (no more forgotten leftovers in the fridge!)
  • More happy jumble days, filled with friends and memory making
Here's to 2011 -- the blank slate that it is -- and to whatever it may bring! What are you hoping for this year?
